About "Thank you"

The Spanish gracias, Italian grazie and French merci all trace to Latin words for grace and mercy. In Portuguese, obrigado literally means "obliged" and changes by speaker gender. In Japanese, the longer ありがとうございます is the polite form.

Using it

Pair thank you with a smile and a slight nod or bow where it is customary. In some cultures it is also polite to thank repeatedly.
