Listen and Guess
Hear a phrase read aloud and name the language.
How to play
Press Play and your device reads a short phrase aloud using the built-in computer voice. Choose which language you think it is from the options. Eight rounds per game.
Difficulty
Easy gives four very different languages to choose from. Medium gives five, including relatives. Hard gives six, with close relatives and every language in the pool.
Scoring
One point per correct answer, eight in total.
How we decide
A phrase is only played if no other language in the options sounds like it (we compare romanisations, so Turkish Merhaba and Arabic Marhaba never meet), it is not a loanword, and spoken twins are never offered together: Hindi and Urdu, Norwegian and Danish, Dutch and Afrikaans.
Daily puzzle, unlimited mode and challenges
Easy, Medium and Hard each have their own daily puzzle, the same for everyone and renewed at midnight UTC. A tick on the tab means you have finished it. Unlimited gives endless fresh puzzles at the difficulty you choose. After a game you can copy your result or challenge a friend to the same puzzle.
Phrases are cross-checked against independent sources but still await a native-speaker review. Language sources.
Questions
What if I hear nothing?
The sound comes from voices installed on your device, so some languages may not have one. When that happens, or when your browser has no speech at all, that round shows the phrase in Latin letters instead so the puzzle is still playable and stays identical for everyone.
Is the voice accurate?
It is a computer voice, so tones, undiacritised Arabic and some names may be mispronounced. Treat it as a guide, not a native speaker.
Is it free, and do I need an account?
It is free and needs no sign-up. The site sets no cookies. Daily results, streaks and personal bests are saved only in your own browser.
How does Challenge a friend work?
When you finish, tap Challenge a friend, optionally type a name (up to 12 characters) and send the link. It holds the game, difficulty, puzzle, your name and score, so your friend plays the same puzzle and sees who won. Nothing is stored on a server.
