How the capital cities quiz works

Each question names a capital city, such as Canberra or Nairobi. You tap the country that it belongs to on the map. A wrong tap turns that country red and costs a try, and when the round ends the map zooms to the right answer. A daily quiz has five capitals, and you are rated out of ten on each.

Three levels

Easy zooms the map to the right part of the world, uses well known countries and gives you three tries (ten, six or three points). Medium shows the whole world and draws from the full set of more than 150 capitals. Hard shows only faint outlines and gives you two tries. Because you are tapping a map and not typing, the quiz teaches the location of each country as well as its capital.

Tricky capitals to learn

• Canberra, not Sydney, is the capital of Australia, and Ottawa, not Toronto, is the capital of Canada.
• Ankara is the capital of Turkey, not Istanbul.
• Brasilia, not Rio de Janeiro or Sao Paulo, is the capital of Brazil.
• Some countries have more than one capital. The game uses the commonly listed administrative capital and leaves out places where the answer is contested.

How many capital cities are in the quiz?

The Medium and Hard levels draw from more than 150 capitals. Easy uses a smaller set of well known countries.

Do I have to type the capital?

No. You are given the capital and you tap its country on the map. That makes it quick on a phone.

Why was Istanbul not accepted for Turkey?

The capital of Turkey is Ankara. Istanbul is the largest city, which is a common mix-up.

How many questions are in a daily quiz?

Five capitals, each rated out of ten.

Is there a list of all the answers?

Yes. The capital cities page lists every country and its capital by continent.

Can I keep playing after the daily quiz?
