How to play

A country has been picked in secret. You can ask six questions: where it is, how many people live there, who its neighbours are, which seas and oceans it touches, what its capital is, and what colours are on its flag. Each answer appears as a clue and the map reacts, for example by highlighting the neighbours. Guess by typing a country or tapping it on the map. A daily game has three countries to find.

Scoring

Solve it after one question for ten points. Each extra question costs one or two points and each wrong guess costs two. After three wrong guesses the case is closed with no points, so it pays to think before you guess.

Difficulty

Easy gives exact facts, from larger and better known countries. Medium gives partial facts: a population range, some of the neighbours and the first letter of the capital. Hard gives only the vaguest hints, such as a wide population range, how many neighbours it has and how many letters its capital has.

Strategy

• Open with the question that rules out the most. Neighbours or location usually cut the list in half.
• Use the map. It highlights what the clue describes, so you can see the region before you guess.
• Combine clues. A landlocked country with a four-letter capital and three neighbours is a small list.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from a normal country quiz?

You are not shown the country. You ask questions and build up a picture, like a detective.

How many questions can I ask?

There are six kinds of question, and you can ask as many as you like, though fewer questions earns a higher score.

What happens if I guess wrong?

Each wrong guess costs two points, and three wrong guesses end the case.

Are the facts accurate?

Populations are rounded estimates for around 2024. Neighbours come from the Natural Earth map, and seas, capitals and flag colours are standard reference facts.

Is there a new puzzle every day?

Yes. There are three new countries every day, plus unlimited play.
