About "Goodbye"

English goodbye comes from "God be with ye". French au revoir, German auf Wiedersehen, Italian arrivederci and Russian до свидания all mean roughly "until we meet again". Others, like Hebrew shalom or Hawaiian aloha, double as hello.

Using it

Use the long, polite form with strangers and shop staff, and the short casual one with friends. When in doubt, choose the polite one.
