Mystery Country: Strategy for Guessing a Country From Clues

Mystery Country hides a country and lets you ask up to six questions. The fewer questions you need, and the fewer wrong guesses you make, the higher your score. Good play is about choosing questions that cut the list of countries the most.

The six questions

  1. Where in the world? The continent. Zooms the map to the region.
  2. How many people? A population figure or range.
  3. The neighbours. How many land borders, and which ones.
  4. Seas and oceans. Which waters it touches, or whether it is landlocked.
  5. The capital. The name, or its length and first letter.
  6. The flag colours.

Which question first?

Neighbours are usually the most powerful clue, because they pin the country to a place on the map. The continent is cheap but weak. Population quickly rules out huge or tiny countries. Save the capital and flag for last, since they only help if you already have a short list.

Combining clues

Landlocked plus three neighbours plus Europe narrows things almost to one answer. An island nation with no neighbours plus the Pacific Ocean points to a short list that includes Japan, the Philippines and New Zealand. Use the map: it highlights neighbours and the region as you ask.

Scoring

You score 10 for a correct answer after one question. Each extra question costs about a point and a half, and each wrong guess costs two. Three wrong guesses end the case.

Difficulty

On Easy the clues are exact and the pool is larger countries. Medium gives partial information, such as a population range. Hard gives only vague hints, such as the number of neighbours and the length of the capital's name.

Frequently asked questions

Can I guess without asking anything?

Yes, but a lucky first guess is rare. One question is usually worth it.

Where do the facts come from?

Populations are rounded estimates for about 2024. Neighbours come from the map data. Seas, capitals and flag colours are standard references.
