Flag Mixer: How to Recognise and Remember Flags
Flag Mixer tests flags three ways: naming a flag, unscrambling a mixed-up one and painting one from memory. Flags are easier to learn once you notice the families they belong to.
Families of flags
- Vertical tricolours: France (blue, white, red), Italy (green, white, red), Ireland (green, white, orange), Belgium (black, yellow, red), Romania (blue, yellow, red).
- Horizontal tricolours: Germany (black, red, gold), the Netherlands (red, white, blue), Hungary (red, white, green), Russia (white, blue, red).
- Nordic crosses: Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland all use an off-centre cross.
- Pan-African colours (green, yellow, red): Ghana, Senegal, Mali, Guinea, Cameroon and others.
- Pan-Slavic colours (white, blue, red): Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia and others.
Look-alikes to watch
- Indonesia and Poland use red and white in opposite orders. Poland is white on top.
- Ireland, Italy and Ivory Coast are all green, white and orange or red, in different orders.
- Romania and Chad are almost identical blue, yellow and red tricolours.
Easy: name that flag
Pick the country from four choices. Look first at the layout (stripes, cross, disc), then at the colours and their order.
Medium: fix the flag
The colours of a known country's flag have been shuffled. Tap two parts to swap their colours. The par is the fewest swaps needed, and each swap over par costs 2 points. The trick is to recall the flag first, then plan your swaps instead of trying them at random.
Hard: paint it
You get a blank flag and a palette that includes some wrong colours. Pick a colour, tap a part, and when all parts are painted check your work. You are scored by how many parts are correct.
About the flags in the game
Only flags made from stripes, crosses, discs, triangles and stars are included. Flags with detailed emblems (such as coats of arms) are left out because they cannot be drawn faithfully with simple shapes.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the flag of the United States not included?
Many flags with large numbers of stars or emblems are left out so that every flag in the game is drawn accurately.
Are the colours exact?
They are close, flat versions. Official shades of blue and red vary from flag to flag.
