Population Showdown: Card Strategy for the Country Game
Population Showdown is a trick-taking card game. Each side has five countries, you play one at a time, and the bigger population wins the trick. Winning is about timing, not just holding the biggest countries.
The core idea
Every card is used once. That means a giant country is only worth one trick, so you should spend it where it is needed, not on a weak dealer card you could have beaten with a smaller one.
When the dealer leads (Easy and Medium)
You see the dealer's card first. Play the smallest card of yours that beats it. If none of your cards can win, play your smallest card and save the stronger ones for later tricks.
When you lead (Hard)
The dealer answers with the smallest card that beats yours, or its smallest card if it cannot win. This changes the logic: leading a giant guarantees a win but wastes it. Leading a middle card tempts the dealer to spend a strong card on a small win.
Know the populations
On Medium and Hard the populations are hidden, so learn the order of magnitude: India and China about 1.4 billion, United States about 340 million, Brazil and Nigeria above 200 million, then Germany, Egypt and Japan in the 80 to 125 million band, then the mid-sized countries between 10 and 70 million. Very small countries are single digits.
Winning a hand
Win three or more tricks out of five to win a hand. In Unlimited mode you keep going until you lose a hand. No two cards in a hand ever have the same population, so there are no ties.
Frequently asked questions
Is the dealer cheating?
No. The dealer plays by a fixed rule and cannot see your remaining cards.
Where do the populations come from?
They are rounded estimates for about 2024, in millions.
